German Shepherd

4 months after adopting a dog, a man suffered a stroke. He says the dog saved his life. Brian Myers, 59, only had to spend 20 minutes with Sadie, a 6-year-old German Shepherd abandoned at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) in Oakland, New Jersey before the 6-year-old dog was at ease with him.

The dog was surrendered to the shelter because her previous owners had moved to a property where dogs of her breed were not allowed. The dog had been challenging since she was cautious of new people and frightened about men while being faithful. Brian visited RBARI in September, a month after Sadie had arrived, and sensed something remarkable in the pup. As a result, he chose to adopt her.

“Brian had a special link with Sadie because he admired her intelligence, her reluctance to trust, and her fierce loyalty once she did.” According to the shelter, Brian offered Sadie another chance at life by adopting her and welcoming her into his home.

And it turned out to be one of the best choices Brian has ever made.

How Did Sadie Save Brian?

Brian had a stroke on January 16 while he was sleeping. He awoke in suddenly the middle of the night to use the bathroom, but he fainted when his feet reached the floor. He had lost control of his muscles and could not pull himself back up.

Fortunately, Sadie was nearby to assist him.

“She quickly got off the bed and ran over to my side, where she laid down next to me and kissed my face, letting me know she was worried and unhappy,” he recalled of the horrifying moment.

Brian’s hand touched her collar as he tried to console the worried dog, which gave him the idea to use her as a counterbalance to pull himself up.

Brian then grabbed her collar, and Sadie began walking backward and pulling her owner as if she understood what was going on. Brian was able to slide across the floor and out of the corner he was trapped in thanks to that pulling and his efforts to get closer to where his phone was.

Brian would not have been able to contact for aid if it hadn’t been for Sadie. Today, Brian is getting intensive physical therapy to heal from a stroke that impaired his left side and speech. He’s putting all into his recovery and is looking forward to seeing Sadie, who is presently staying with his brother.

Brian’s brother has been sending him images and videos of Sadie while he’s in rehab. They’d Face Time every night as well. Brian called the shelter after Sadie saved him and requested that they post his story on Facebook. He hopes that spreading the word about his dog’s bravery would encourage others to consider adopting a rescue dog.

For saving her owner’s life, Sadie deserves all the love, pets, and treats in the world. Share this article and let the others know about this dog’s bravery!
